The time has come. I have finally branched out away from WizKids minis after so long and tried my hand at painting my very own HeroForge miniature, Elias Thorn. Elias is an npc from my home campaign and as you can probably tell, he’s a wizard. The reasons I wanted to paint him are: I wanted to try painting HeroForge minis before I painted my players minis, and also he’s pretty cool and I wanted him. For those who don’t know, HeroForge is a service that allows people to design their own custom 3D printed miniature. They print their minis using resin SLA which uses a UV light to harden liquid resin layer by layer. I was concerned about painting this because of the somewhat visible print layers that persist. Luckily my worries were unfounded. The more layers of paint I applied the less I was able to make out those print lines. If you look closely you can still kind of make out some of the print lines, on the half cloak/shawl especially, but overall I don’t think it’s that noticeable.
It was not only fun to paint my very own character, but it was also really interesting to paint the fire. I had painted a gradient before on my Spectator, but this time around there were far deeper textures to work around. I think I should have gone a bit thinner on the paint, perhaps used a glaze, to get a more refined transition from one color to the other but I’m still happy with it. For anyone considering designing and ordering their own HeroForge mini I definitely recommend it!
