Monster Mania: Umber Hulk

I’m not gonna lie to y’all, there are a shit ton of monster that dwell beneath the ground. That makes sense though doesn’t it? I mean it’s in the name, DUNGEONS & Dragons. Clearly there is gonna be no shortage of subterranean dwellers. An addition to that list is the Umber Hulk. This large monstrosity, the Monster Manuals words not mine, is an elegantly simple enemy to treasure seekers. It’s existence is to dig around the earth and eat, like most Underdark inhabitants. It burrows long tunnels, occasionally collapsing them for fear of being followed, and hides in the stone using it’s tremorsense to detect nearby prey before erupting in stone and dirt.

What sets Umber Hulks apart from other hulking (I know) monsters is its confusing gaze. When an adventurer comes eye to eye with an Umber Hulk they are overcome with a magical influence that threatens to disrupt the motor skills of the adventurer. Most players that survive an encounter with an Umber Hulk typically remember very little about it because of this confusing gaze. Fun fact: the 4th edition Umber Hulk looks really cool, like something out of Power Rangers. If you have a chance do a quick Google search because I was to lazy to include it.

Thanks for reading and be sure to let me know what your favorite monster is! Till next time.
